Our Denver dentist uses the traditional explorer to detect decay  Visual inspection also has been a staple of detection carious lesions (cavities). What is interesting and very high tech is the use of the Diagnodent to detect decay.  The diagnodent use a Laser fluorescence to determine if a suspect area is a cavity .  The reading range from 0-99 with reading over 25 suspect and numbers in the 30-40′s and higher cavities.

How Invisalign works

Invisalign works on a variety of different types of malocclusions.  As a general rule is works best with simple crowding or flaring or teeth.  If your teeth have severe crowding or a significant malocclusion traditional orthodontic (with or without orthognathic surgery) may be required.

Cosmetic dental bridge try-in Denver Dentist

Our Denver Dentists Dr. James DeLapp and Dr. H. Candace DeLapp have on occasion elected to have a cosmetic bridge try-in prior to final delivery of the case. Porcelain crowns whether individual units or as bridges are difficult to evaluate until delivery.  The try-in appointment allows us to evaluate the cosmetics of the bridge and make any adjustments (if found). While an uncommon occurrence as a rule of thumb our Denver Dentists have found that a bisque bake bridge try-in can be an invaluable procedure in difficult cosmetic cases. When the dental porcelain is in the bisque stage it is relatively easy for the dental laboratory to add porcelain to it and modify the size and shape of the teeth.  The disadvantage is the porcelain in not glazed and has a dull appearance and slight darker appearance to what will be the final product. In addition, at this stage, we have an opportunity to evaluate the fit or seal of the crowns.  If the fit is inadequate a new dental impression is needed and the bridge should be re-fabricated.  The reasons why a bridge fits on the model and not the patient is information for another article and is extensive.  Certainly no one is happy (doctor or the patient) when that occurs.  The bottom line is we wish to deliver a product that meets our standards.

Patient approval

Once the artistic representation of the case is approved by the patient, the bridge is sent back to the dental laboratory for modification.  If modifications are extensive it is recommended that the patient return for a second bisque bake try-in.  If on the other hand it is meets the patients and doctors approval… the case is sent back to the dental laboratory for final staining and glazing. The patient returns a few day later… maybe a week for final cementation or bonding.

In a previous blog we discussed dental implants in general and this article describes the use of the locator system in the Nobel Biocare system.  These locators are resilient attatchments that go on top of the implant and have the following criteria

• One (1) lb. design (red)
• One  and one-half (1.5) design (blue)
• Three (3) lb. design (pink)
• Four (4) lb. design (green)

This system works well  if the divergence angle does not exceed 20 degrees or a divergent angle of the implant not more that 40 degrees.  What this means to patients and dentists is that the implants do not have to be perfectly aligned for this system to work.

In addition our Denver Implant dentist use this system because the vertical height of the locator on the implant ranges from 2.5 -3.7 mm. What this means to dentists is, as a general rule, we do not need as much space to place the locators.  Some implant denture stabilizing systems require much more room.

Easy for patients seat their implant denture

The self locating design of the locators allows the patient to seat the overdenture  without the need for very accurate alignment.  In addition the dual retention of this system provides inside and outside retention that gives these locators longer lasting performance.

Downside of locators

Locators do wear out and need to be replaced.  Maintenance is expected and how often the locators need to be replaced is dependent upon the patient.  Some patients are harder on the implant system than others.
